gardening in the woods

Awhile back, I was asked about a particular hosta whose photo I had submitted to The Hosta Library.   http://www.hostalibrary.org/index.html

I was asked where I'd gotten it and if I knew anyone currently selling it.  This particular specimen was H. 'Blessings' - -  a lovely hosta we obtained when we bought the display garden belonging to the now defunct Blue Ridge Nursery  (formerly on Blue Ridge Blvd in Raytown, Missouri).  Not long after, I received a similar query from someone else.

Check out our "Project Details" page for complete information about Phil's varied projects andselect the "Contact Us" page if you'd like to visit HostaAlley in person.

Nobody sells this "antique" variety any more and I felt badly it might disappear altogether.  Thus, I dug up a portion and sent it to A to Z Perennials  to have it tissue cultured.  Bob Solberg of Green Hill Hostas grew them on for approximately two years and transported them to Minnesota, where Mary Schwartzbauer fostered them for the month prior to the AHS National Convention in Minneapolis.

At that convention I gave these plants away to anyone who answered five (out of ten) questions utilizing the Hosta Treasury  to research the answers.  The Hosta Treasury  is the site where my Hosta registry data resides and is a great resource for plant details, but also has a "finder" function where people can determine which AHGA nurseries have a particular hosta for sale.  Check it out sometime at http://www.hostaregistrar.org/search.php.

Ultimately, I gave away about 200 plants to individuals and 20 plants to each of four local hosta societies  to use as they wish.  AND - I came home with about 2 dozen for my own garden!!  The little guys pictured below will make a nice border (or mass planting) once they've matured and look like the mother plant (shown above).

The video above shows a BIRD's EYE view of HostaAlley.  It's about 5 minutes long and provides a glimpse into what you could see if you visit us.

The video was filmed in 4K so set the quality setting as high as your internet service will manage (select the gear icon, then "Quality").
